The 2014 Sasol Solar Challenge is coming to your town, witness solar vehicle technology and innovation in motion, as local and international teams pass through Sasolburg, Kroonstad, Bloemfontein, Colesberg, Graaff-Reinet, Port Elizabeth, Knysna and Swellendam en-route from Pretoria to Cape Town.
Ranked as one of the top global events of its kind, the Sasol Solar Challenge is an exciting eight-day country wide endurance challenge demonstrating the sophistication and performance of solar-powered vehicles.
After months of hard work, 11 university and school teams have created innovative designs and built their own engineering systems, with the ultimate challenge of powering a solar car across South Africa.
“The challenge calls on young engineering and technology enthusiasts to use the disciplines learnt through science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) based subjects to develop solar vehicle technology,” said Richard Hughes, Group Sponsorship Manager at Sasol.
“Each of the vehicles you will see en-route is a laboratory on wheels, using various engineering disciplines showcasing the development and sophistication of solar technology,” he added.
This year’s solar challenge includes a school education programme which will take place at the Pretoria, Sasolburg, Graaff-Reinet, Port Elizabeth, Knysna and Cape Town pit stops. This activation is aimed at showing learners that the application of mathematics and science can be fun. Local schools from these areas have been invited to build their own model solar cars and compete against each other in the hopes of being the fastest solar team.
Join us at the pit stops to meet the drivers, see these amazing solar vehicles first hand, and enjoy the inter-school solar car racing competition.
