The 2016 Sasol Solar Challenge is open to the public and media at all stops, and you can catch the cars as they stop in the towns below, or look out for them on their route:
Gauteng:
Saturday, 24 September
START: 6h30 – 8h00, start is at CSIR, Pretoria
Route: N1, R21, R24, N3, N12, R59, Sasol Paardeberg Road, Jan Haak, JG Strijdom, HF Verwoerd Road to DP de Villiers stadium in Sasolburg.
10h00 – 15h00, Sasolburg stop and loop route
Watch them do their control stops at DP de Villiers Stadium – where there will be a big entertainment stand for kids – or catch them doing their loop route:
HF Verwoerd Rd, JG Strijdom Rd, Jan Haak Ave, R57, Pichler Road, R57 to Heilbron, R549 to Deneysville, R716, R82, R59, Paardeberg Rd/Vaalpark exit, Jan Haak Ave, JG Strijdom road, HF Verwoerd to DP de Villiers Stadium.
This loop is 73.39 km.
FINISH: from 16h30 – 17h30
Watch as they cross the stage finish line at the Blouskool in Kroonstad, or see them on the way there:
Route: HF Verwoerd road, JG Strijdom road, R57, R59 to Vereeniging, N1 to Bloemfontein through toll gate, R721/R34 to Kroonstad, R721 North Road to Vredefort, R706 to Noordweg/Kroonstad. In Kroonstad, they will go via du Toit Street to the Blouskool.
Sunday, 25 September
START: 6h30 – 8h00, Blouskool, Kroonstad
Come see the teams off and wish them luck, or catch them en route to Theunissen:
From Blouskool, via du Toit Street to R76 out of town and onto the R721, then via N1, R34, exit 393 to R34, R27, R30, into Theunissen via Bree Street, Rugby Street, and stop at Theunissen High School.
10h00 – 15h00, Theunissen
Watch them do their control stops at Theunissen High School – where there will be a big entertainment stand for kids – or catch them doing their loop route:
They will leave town on the R30, then go via: R708, N5 to De Villiers St/Winburg, R708, R30 and back to Theunissen High School.
This loop is 73.77 km.
FINISH: from 16h30 – 17h30
Watch as they cross the stage finish line at Kopano Nokeng Country Lodge, Bloemfontein, or see them on the road on their way there:
They will leave Theunissen on the R30, merge onto the N1 and take exit 202 to Bloemfontein via the R30, then head towards Bloemfontein Airport/Maselspoort, and follow Midway Roodewal to the Kopano Nokeng Country Lodge.
Monday, 26 September
START: 6h30 to 8h00
Come see the teams off and wish them luck, or catch them en route to Edenburg:
They’ll depart from Maselspoort resort gate, then take the N8 to Bloemfontein, M10 to Noordhoek, through Wilcocks and Kenneth Kaunda Road to the N1 to Colesberg until turning off to Edenburg via the R717.
10h00 – 15h00, Edenburg
Watch them do their control stops at the Church Square in Edenburg – where there will be a big entertainment stand for kids – or catch them doing their loop route:
Via the N1, teams will loop around on the R717, back onto the road to Edenburg and into town.
This loop is 37.09 km
FINISH: from 16h30 – 17h30
Watch as they cross the stage finish line at Gariep Dam Forever Resort.
Eastern Cape
Tuesday, 27 September
START: 6h30 to 8h00
Come see the teams off and wish them luck, or catch them en route to Middelburg:
Teams will leave the Forever Resort at Gariep via Fiskaal Street, then via: R33, R701, R58, R390, Van Riebeeck Street/R56 and into town on Smid Street, right onto Meintjies Street, left into Du Plessis Street, right onto Bennie Street, left onto Victoria Street and into Middelburg High School
10h00 – 15h00, Middelburg
Watch them do their control stops at Middelburg High School – where there will be a big entertainment stand for kids – or catch them doing their loop route:
They will leave Middelburg High School the same way they came into town and go onto the R56, then turn left onto Church street, right at the railway crossing, left at the end of the road, right onto the ramp to take the N9, then all the way to the rest stop where they will turn around and drive the same route back to the school.
This loop is 47.24 km.
FINISH: from 16h30 – 17h30
Watch as they cross the stage finish line at Montego Field, Graaff-Reinet, or catch them on the way there from Middelburg:
Teams will leave town on the same route as above, then take the R56, turn left onto Church Street, right at the railway crossing and left at the T-junction to take the ramp onto the N9. The N9 leads into Graaff-Reinet, where the will take Caledon and Stockenstroom Streets to Montego Field.
Wednesday, 28 September
START: 6h30 to 8h00
Give the teams a warm send off at the Dutch Reformed Church, Graaff-Reinet, or catch them en route to Jansenville:
They will go around the church onto the main road, take the R63 out of town, then the R75 to Jansenville until stopping at the control stop on Bridge Street – you can’t miss it!
10h00 – 15h00, Jansenville
Watch them do their control stops at the Mohair Museum/Sid Fourie Huis in Jansenville, or catch them doing their loop route:
They’ll take Bridge Street out of town, turn right onto the R339 just after the bridge, then turn left into Klipplaat, make a U-turn, and take the same road back.
This loop is 65.7 kilometres.
FINISH: from 16h30 – 17h30
Watch as they cross the stage finish line at Kings Beach, Port Elizabeth – where there will be a big entertainment stand for kids – or catch them on the road on their way there:
They will leave Jansenville via Bridge Street towards Port Elizabeth, taking the R367 Swartkops – NOT the R75 to PE. Then at the end of the road they turn right onto Grahamstown Road, left onto John Tallant Road, and then right onto the N2 to Humansdorp. They’ll take the first off-ramp – M4/Settlers way, keep right on the M4 to Summerstrand and stay on the road to Humewood, Beach Front. Then they’ll turn left into Humewood into Kings Beach on Kings Road.
Thursday, 29 September
START: 6h30 – 8h00
Come cheer on the teams as they leave Kings Beach, Port Elizabeth, or watch them drive past en route to Humansdorp along this route:
Teams will set off over the start line at Kings Beach, then take Kings Road towards Beach Road. They’ll turn right at the first cross street onto Beach Road, then continue onto Humewood, staying on Humewood at the first fork, and keeping right towards Settlers Way/M4 at the second fork. They’ll take exit 751A, merge onto the N2 towards Kempston Road/Cape Town, then take exit 665 for the R330 toward Hankey/Humansdorp. They will turn left onto the R330, left again onto Voortrekker Road/R102, then right onto Nico Malan which becomes Du Plessis Street. They’ll stop at the Nico Malan High School on the same road.
10h00 – 15h00, Humansdorp
Watch them do their control stops at Nico Malan High School, Humansdorp – where there will be a big entertainment stand for kids – or catch them doing their loop route:
The teams will leave Nico Malan High School, go left onto Du Plessis Street toward Voortman Street, left onto Kemp Street, left onto Park Straight and onto the R330. They’ll take the first exit onto the R330 and continue back onto Park Street and go back to the school via Kemp and Du Plessis Street.
This loop is 34.2 km.
FINISH: from 16h30 – 17h30
Watch as they cross the stage finish line at the Mosaic Market, Sedgefield, or see them along the route there:
Teams will leave Humansdorp via the R330, merge onto the N2, and come into town via Waterfront Drive, Main Road, Jan van Riebeek Road and Paul Kruger Street. They’ll cross the stage finish line at the Sedgefield Market.
Friday, 30 September
START: 6h30 – 8h00
Bring your family and wave off the teams as they cross the start line at the Mosaic Market in Sedgefield, or catch them on their way to Mossel Bay:
Teams will leave Sedgefield via Jan van Riebeeck Road towards the N2, taking the N2 until exiting towards George/Airport/Mossel Bay/Cape Town, then via the N2 until exiting on the R102 towards Mossel Bay, where they will do their control stop in the Langeberg Mall parking lot.
10h00 – 15h00, Mossel Bay
Watch them do their control stops at the Langeberg Mall – where there will be a big entertainment stand for kids – or catch them doing their loop route:
Teams will leave the Langeberg Mall and head towards Louis Fourie Road/R102, where they will turn onto the R328, turn left at the end of the road, take the first right onto the R328, continue back onto Louis Fourie Road/R102 and head back into the Langeberg Mall parking lot.
This loop is 29.52 km.
FINISH: from 16h30 – 17h30
Watch as they cross the stage finish line at the Swellendam Showgrounds from 16h30, or catch them en route:
Teams will leave the Langeberg Mall parking lot and head towards Louis Fourie Road/R102, then take the N2 to Cape Town, staying on the N2 until Swellendam, where they’ll turn into town on Station Street and then take Cooper Street to the Swellendam Showgrounds.
Saturday, 1 October
START: 6h30 – 8h00
Give the teams a fantastic send-off on their last day of this gruelling challenge as they leave Swellendam Showgrounds, or catch them en route to Caledon:
Teams will leave Swellendam Showgrounds via Cooper and Station Street and turn right to take the N2 to Cape Town. At Caledon the will turn left onto Nerina Way and then left again into Caledon Resort.
10h00 – 15h00, Caledon
Watch them do their control stops at Caledon Resort – where there will be a big entertainment stand for kids – or catch them doing their loop route:
From the Caledon Resort/Casino & Spa, the teams will turn right onto Nerina Way towards the N2, and then onto the N2, from which they take the R406, then Strydomlaan, George Grey street, Volks Road, Marx Street, back onto Strydomlaan, onto the R406, N2 and into the Caledon Resort via Nerina Way.
This loop is 64.96 km.
1 October, from 15h00, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town
Come and congratulate the teams as they cross the final finish line at Pier 3 at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, where there will be a big entertainment stand for kids – or catch them doing their very last loop route:
From Caledon the teams will head to Cape Town on the N2, keeping right on De Waal Drive/N2 to continue onto Nelson Mandela Boulevard/N2. From there they take Buitengracht Street/M62, turn right onto Helen Suzman Boulevard/M6, and then go via Granger Bay Boulevard to Jetty Street, and on to the finish line at the V&A Waterfront, where we will have an unmistakable presence!
Teams will be arriving earlier than on most days – and won’t all cross the finish line together.
