2022 SASOL SOLAR CHALLENGE PUBLIC EXPO SET TO TAKE PLACE AT CARNIVAL CITY

Date:

The public expo for the 2022 Sasol Solar Challenge will take place at Carnival City Casino, Brakpan (East of Johannesburg) on 8 September from 09:00 until 15:00. Scholars and communities in the Johannesburg area and surroundings will have an opportunity to view the cutting-edge solar cars and learn more about solar technology as well as different science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) concepts.

School learners will take the centre stage at the expo, as this is an opportunity to inspire them to pursue STEM subjects in school. “Once the scrutineering process is done at Red Star Raceway on 7 September, the teams will then move to Carnival City Casino to prepare for the public expo,” said Robert Walker, Owner and Director of the Sasol Solar Challenge. “The expo is an opportunity for the solar car teams to showcase their technologies and for the public, especially school learners to witness STEM in rea-life and learn from like-minded scholars from around the world.”

The public expo is taking place a day before the actual event commences on 9 September at the same venue. The solar cars will start departing Carnival City Casino from 08:00. Spectators will have an opportunity to come and support the teams from 07:30, as they start their eight-day endurance challenge.

“We are delighted to host the Sasol Solar Challenge at our facilities. One of our key focuses at Sun International is to provide memorable experiences for our guests, while also promoting environmental sustainability. This makes us the perfect partner and host of the event, as our values aligns with those of the Sasol Solar Challenge,” said Annemie Turk, General Manager at Carnival City Casino. “We look forward to have the teams showcasing their sustainable technologies and innovations at our facilities.”

The 2022 Sasol Solar Challenge will incorporate special stages, which includes half and full blind stages, where information relating to the route will be withheld until the night before teams take on the road, forcing them to strategise last minute.

The route from Johannesburg to Cape Town will include five provinces and 18 towns. New towns include Brakpan, Trompsburg, Willowmore, Kirkwood, Jeffreys Bay, Riversdale and Caledon. The event is also bringing new local and international teams including those competing for the first time in South Africa.

Nozipho Mbatha, Senior Manager: Group Brand and Sponsorships at Sasol said: “It is important that we bring together young people and the solar car teams, if we want to spread the STEM education awareness further. It is easier for young people to understand the STEM and energy concepts when they witness the solutions in real-world and see what they can do. The public expo will be of great value to them including those who are still in school and those who are just starting their careers in STEM fields.”

Spectators are welcome at all stops, and more information on the route and the teams can be found at:
